Technology today is a double-edged sword. It can cause more tension in our existence but it can also be a dutiful and loyal friend if we allow it to. It can also guide us to products needed for both our personal consumption or for the sending of gifts to the chosen benefactors of our gracious heart.

Survive Power Outages: High Winds, Snow, And Other Natural Disasters Take Out Power

When your lights go dim, you may wonder what the problem is? Or, you may know? Either way, you have a lot to do. I’m going to share some survival tips for Power Outages, resulting from recent experience.

1. Locate light sources and keep them handy.

Light Sources include candles, flashlights, camp lanterns, and oil lamps. Most homes have a few of these items being used as ‘decorator accessories’. Candles in glass jars are particularly appropriate for lighting during a power outage. In fact, I keep a few extra in the cupboard just for this purpose.

The Ganz company is now one of the most recognized toy companies in the world. This is partly to the success of the recently-released new Webkinz animals. More known as a company that is more popular for its plush animals and collectibles, it really hit the mark with the new Webkinz toys, which allow children not only to play these up front, but also play with them in the Webkinz World online. In this virtual world, they can feed, bathe as well as play with their pets.

Another 50 Billion Dollars For Iraq

I woke up this morning thinking about Iraq. Last night I learned President Bush has asked for another 50 billion dollars to cover the cost of the Iraq war. Some news agencies report the cost of the war is now at 3 billion dollars a week.

How much more suffering can be inflicted on the Iraqi people for another 50 billion? How many more American soldiers will be killed while spending that 50 billion? Who is going to get that 50 billion dollars? What is not being done in this country because another 50 billion is going to someone waiting in Iraq?

Happily Ever After The Divorce?

We have all grown up with dreams of the princess bride fairy tale. Every woman, no matter how sensible, has been indoctrinated since birth with Disney-esq. romantic notions about marrying Prince Charming and living happily ever after.

Many women who find themselves in the already turbulent and transition filled midlife years have to face another reality: the gradual decay of the marriage myth which seems to come to a head somewhere right around 50 years old. It seems that when midlife women begin to seek their power and independence, marriage becomes…optional.

The Bald Eagle Defies Extinction

Many Americans feared the extinction of their national symbol, but the bald eagle has been slowing growing in numbers and largely recovered from its earlier decline. The bald eagle was found to be endangered in 1940 and a law was passed, the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, to protect it from hunting. Once the threat from hunting was gone, the species found its numbers declining further by the ingestion of DDT. In 1963 the numbers of breeding pairs was only 417, leading to the 1973 inclusion in the list of endangered species.

Prison - A Self-perpetuating System Of Recidivism

The roots of the word prison comes from prisune from before 1112, which means confinement. Prisune was influence by pris, which means taken or seized. From Latin prehenso–to lay hold of, clutch at. Prysner–one kept in prison: probably 1350-75.

Is prison a deterrent to crime? Judging by the recidivism rate, no. Many see recidivism as the result of a perversion of the formal aims of imprisonment. What are the formal aims of imprisonment? Foucault (1977) says that formal punishment started as revenge, then shifted to the defense of society (p. 90). We could easily say that it has shifted back to revenge when considering such statements as “lock him up and throw the key away,” or “he got exactly what he deserved.”

The Straight Talk Express Will Not Reach Its Final Destination

Eight years ago, I thought John McCain was the best candidate running for the presidency. I have always been impressed with his book, “Faith of My Fathers” which tells the story of McCain and in doing so, shows a man with great character, who is a true American patriot and hero.

Six months ago, McCain had raised twenty five million dollars for his 2008 campaign and was in the lead in most public opinion polls for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008.
