San Telmo Review: Ocho Punto Cinco

I was at first interested in renting an apartment in Palermo or Recoleta. But then I was told by someone I had just met in Berlin that when I visit Buenos Aires the place to stay is really this apartment in San Telmo. I had previously stayed in Palermo and I did tend to agree with him that I thought that Palermo is becoming too trendy and with all the new high rises it doesn’t have that old world charm of some of the other sections of the city. So I was able to get a reservation at Ocho Punto Cinco in San Telmo and was very happy with my choice.

Shimla sits majestically on the lap between seven hills. It has had the honor of being the summer capital of the erstwhile British Raj since 1864 till 1947 when India got its independence. The official residence of the Viceroy shifted from the winter capital which was Calcutta till 1911 and subsequently New Delhi up till independence to escape the burning heat of the plains typical of the Indian summers. Shimla was discovered in 1819 following Gurkha War and caught the attention of Lord Benedict the governor-general of India from 1828-1835. The British referred this hill station as ‘the Queen of the Hills’ after its enchanting beauty amidst the lofty north-western Himalayas wrapped in the captivating forests of the deodars, pine, rhododendron, silver oak and the cedars. Shimla is beautifully perched at the elevation of 2,130 which is approximately 6,988 ft above the sea level.

Amboseli National Park was Kenya’s first established game park. Since 1948, millions of international guests, including Hollywood film companies, have been drawn to the park by the magic of Mt. Kilimanjaro-the snowcapped mountain reaching to the sky above, with wildlife grazing under flat-topped thorn trees below.

Despite its proximity to the mountain, many tourists today are disappointed with Amboseli because of its dusty dirt roads and the barren expanses caused in part by the overuse of humans and animals. Years of abuse by tourists vehicles have left off-road vehicle tracks where there had been grasslands. Prolific herds of elephant have broken and destroyed trees-creating stark and stunning weathered sculptures on the landscape.
